Critical WhatsUp Gold Authentication Flaw Exposes Organizations to Cyber Attack

WhatsUp Gold, a popular network monitoring software, has identified a significant security vulnerability that could potentially expose numerous organizations to cyber attacks.

The flaw, which affects versions released before 2024.0.0, involves multiple critical vulnerabilities that could allow attackers to gain unauthorized access to sensitive information.

CVE-2024-6670 and CVE-2024-6671: SQL Injection Vulnerabilities

CVE-2024-6670 and CVE-2024-6671 are critical SQL Injection vulnerabilities with a CVSS score of 9.8.

These vulnerabilities occur when the application is configured with only a single user. An unauthenticated attacker can exploit these flaws to retrieve the user’s encrypted password, potentially leading to unauthorized access to the system.

Sina Kheirkhah of the Summoning Team, working in collaboration with the Trend Micro Zero Day Initiative, discovered these vulnerabilities.

CVE-2024-6672: Privilege Escalation Vulnerability

CVE-2024-6672, with a CVSS score of 8.8, is another SQL Injection vulnerability that allows an authenticated low-privileged attacker to escalate their privileges by modifying a privileged user’s password.

This could enable attackers to perform actions generally restricted to higher-level users, posing a significant security risk.

CVE-2024-7763: Authentication Bypass Issue

CVE-2024-7763, rated with a CVSS score of 9.8, involves an authentication bypass issue that allows attackers to obtain encrypted user credentials. This vulnerability could be exploited to gain unauthorized access to sensitive data and systems.

Organizations using WhatsUp Gold are advised to review their systems for potential indicators of compromise.

Specifically, they should check the Alert Center Libraries under Settings > Actions and Alerts for any unusual data in the “Name” column. This could indicate unauthorized access or manipulation.

Organizations must upgrade to WhatsUp Gold 2024.0.0 to mitigate these vulnerabilities as soon as possible.
